Grand Cayman

I am so lucky that I am able to leave the DC winter weather and take a quick vacation to the tropical Cayman Islands.

I woke up early on President’s Day to catch my flight.

I wore snake skin print pajama pants and brown booties on the plane.

My layover was appropriately in Philadelphia, the birthplace of America. I saw this amazing Lego Liberty Bell in the airport.

IMG_0145 The night I arrived, I attended a birthday dinner at a wonderful Italian restaurant called Casanova’s.

Tuesday, I spent the afternoon window shopping in Georgetown, the capital of the island.

I had lunch at Margaritaville. The bar looked like a tiki hut and they had a water slide for their guests!

I rocked white, cat eye sunglasses that whole day.

In the evening, I went on a night submarine ride to view the amazing coral reefs that the Cayman Islands are known for.

We went over 100 feet underwater! The coral was inspiringly pretty and I tried my best to photograph the ‘wildlife’.

At the end of the trip, I received a Dive Certificate and watched the submarine submerg in the water. My final day was spent on the beach.

My friends and I went to my favorite place in Grand Cayman, Calico Jack’s, for lunch. I ordered like a local and got the grouper. Yum! Oh, and a strong pina colada!

Calico Jacks is perfect for sitting back, listening to music and watching the sunset.

The we spent the rest of the night dancing at the Royal Palms.

I had a FABULOUS trip. I can’t wait to get back to that island!

Thanks Grand Cayman and @1People1Love!

Outfit #7 – Packing Day

30 x 30 Remix Challenge

Outfit #7

Sweater, Forever21. White T, Old Navy. Black jeans, Old Navy. Blue heels, H&M. Necklace, Dorothy Perkins.

It happens every time I travel. At the last minute, I am running around like a chicken with its head cut off trying to pack. When I don’t have a lot of time, I tend to overpack. But I restricted myself to a small 21″ carryon, allowing me some restraint on overpacking. This is what I packed for my trip to the Cayman Islands.

I decided that since the weather would be so warm (high 80’s and humid) in the Cayman Islands, I would take a break from the 30×30 remix challenge. This was the last outfit that I documented before I left for my trip. Most of my day was spent at home packing and tying up loose ends.

Check back soon to hear all about my trip to the Cayman Islands!

What does LadyMorganLaFey Mean?

I get a lot of weird looks when I tell people that my email/Twitter or whatever is Ladymorganlafey. They don’t know how to pronounce it and are generally confused. Most people don’t understand why I don’t have a normal email/Twiiter/username that is more similar to my name.

Well, the fact is my full name is fairly common and usually already taken. So I started Ladymorganlafey.

First off, it is a play off of Morgan Le Fay.

Morgan le fay was a sorceress in the King Arthur legend. She was also the half-sister of King Arthur and learned her sorcery from Merlin, the wizard. I learned all about the legend when I was in fifth grade and was always most interested in her character because we shared the same name.

So instead of copying the legend, I made a slight twist.

Morgan le fay -> Morgan la fey.

And since I am SUCH a lady, I threw a lady in front.

lady  \ˈlā-dē\  morgan \ˈmȯr-gən\  la \ˈlä\  fey \ˈfā\

I think lady and Morgan are self explainable. I am a lady and my name is Morgan.

la \ˈlä\

To pronounce this, think of the movie Sound of Music. Think do, re, mi, fa, so, LA, ti, dow.

fey \ˈfā\

Listen to pronunciation here.

According to Merriam-Websters dictionary, fey has many meanings.  It’s an adjective that means crazy, touched, doomed, clairvoyant, excessively refined and/or quaintly unconventional. That’s a lot!

Whatever the case, Ladymorganlafey is becoming my digital identity, however obscure it may be. So I hope this helps to clear up any confusion there may be about the name Ladymorganlafey.

Outfit #6 – Trying to Make It Work

30 x 30 Remix Challenge

Outfit #6

This skirt was a purchase that I made with some regret. Being unable to return the skirt, I am following the words of Tim Gunn and I am trying to make it work.

What I do love about this Stylemint skirt is its neutral color and demure length. But there is nothing timid about this skirt, it is tight and form-fitting, making it more appropriate for a girl’s night out than the office.

I paired the skirt with a chambray shirt from Forever21

and blue heels from H&M.

Unfortunately, this is not a weather-appropriate outfit. I would HAVE to pair this outfit with tights to venture outside (I will try this next time) but I love the way this skirt looks with bare legs. Although I am not in love with the skirt yet, I am hoping that a few more sessions of dress up with give me some ideas on incorporating it into my wardrobe.

On another note, I just returned from a trip to the Cayman Islands. I had such a fun and relaxing time that I am already making plans to go back. Otherwise, I am using this weekend to catch-up on blogging, so check back soon for outfit #7.

Outfit #5 – Pink and Polka Dots

30 x 30 Remix Challenge

Outfit #5

Top, Stylemint. Skirt, Jason Wu for Target. Tights, NY&Company.

I wish that I had that TGIF excitement that comes at the end of the week, but I have so much work to do. I am taking a trip to visit a friend in the Caribbean on Monday and if I work hard this weekend, I can play hard next week.

I knew right away when I found these pink tights in my closet that I wanted to pair them with the pleated skirt. Colored tights are so popular. From Bohemian to preppy, designers have featured colored tights on their recent New York Fashion Week runways.

I love how Anna Sui and Kate Spade are such different designers and they both used colored tights to match their aesthetic. Anna Sui is bohemian and eclectic and paired bold tights with complimentary bold colored clothing. Kate Spade is preppy and ladylike, she matched a pink skirt with red and purple tights. Who would of thought? They offer some fabulous inspiration on how to pair bold tights with other bold colored clothing and accessories.

Boots, Aldo.

These boots are comfortable and look just like Isabel Marant Bobby sneakers. You can see the comparison from The Flower Girl. She is trying to sell her pair.

Belt, Dorothy Perkins. Bracelet, Jewelmint. Pinky Ring, ASOS.

I didn’t go the bold route, the tights were the only bold statement I made with my outfit. A gold belt and jewelry were the finishing touches.

Bag, Cynthia Rowley.

Check out my Pinterest board dedicated to tropical getaways. It has serves as inspiration for my trip. There are useful pins on how to pack, the many uses of a scarf and much more. Lately, I have been obsessed with pinning white blazers and the perfect airport outfit.

30 X 30 Remix Challenge

Outfit #3 & #4

Black, white and gray are a no fail combination. When I make outfits for the 30 x 30 remix challenge, I choose one item of clothing that I want to wear and then build an outfit around it. In outfit #3, I chose the sweater and in #4, I chose the skirt. Both outfits taught me lessons.

Outfit #3 taught me how much I love this sweater! It is from The Limited and is pretty old, but I have never gotten rid of it. Now I know why. It’s a thick, cozy sweater that’s not itchy and the weave has a little stretch in it, so it doesn’t look baggy and oversized. It also layers really well under a peacoat.

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 5.04.39 PM

Jeans & boots, Old Navy. Hat, H&M.

Outfit #4 taught me how crafty I have become. The skirt I wore was made from an ill-fitting dress from Forever21. The dress looked like this:

photo: Forever21

The top part of the dress was too large, so I cut it off and made the bottom part a skirt. This is the first time I am wearing it as such, and what a great idea! I added a white T, a color blocked blazer and black boots. The blazer and skirt were a winning combination, the boots were just plain comfortable.

Blazer, Forever21. Tee, Old Navy. Boots, Old Navy.

I wore this spiked necklace from H&M, but it refused to lay flat [as you can tell in the picture], but I got over it.

Enjoy the one’s you love and Check back soon for outfit #5

How to Get Smooth, Kissable Lips

No one likes dry lips, but it’s hard to avoid in cold weather. With the winter winds storming, it’s imparative to have easy remedies on hand for dry and flaky lips. Check out one of my favorite ways to keep my lips smooth with a homemade lip scrub.

You don’t have to stick to my recipe, you can trade olive oil for coconut oil, almond oil, vitamin E oil or grapeseed oil. You can also replace regular sugar with brown sugar or baking soda. Either way, you will get smooth lips and you won’t worry about accidentally swallowing anything.

Most lipsticks and glosses are not moisturizing enough for me and dry lips can be so uncomfortable, so I always make sure I have lip balm in my bag. The Burt’s Bees lip balm I featured in the video is a favorite. I always have some on hand, plus it is super affordable.

Another popular pick are the Sugar lip balms from Fresh. The Sugar rose [left] has a LIGHT pink tint that isn’t overwhelming on any skin tone and the original lip balm [middle] is clear. I got a chance to try these last year when Sephora featured the Fresh Sugar lip balms as their VIB birthday gift. Unfortunately, I find that the balms are so soft that they can easily break. They are not meant to HEAL dry lips, and are better purposed to moisturize already smooth lips.

Another favorite of mine is Waxelene.

Like the Burt’s Bees lip balm, Waxelene is also made of beeswax. In fact, it only has 4 ingredients and this jar has lasted forever considering I use this 3 to 4 times a day.

If you want some more tips on how to keep you tips kissable soft, check out this article from WebMD which has some great tips on ingredients to avoid and event tackles the notion of a lip balm ‘addiction’.
